Rev. Bill Crews’s Exodus Foundation will receive $2.23 million in federal government funding to extend its acclaimed indigenous literacy program across the country.
“We are delighted with the commitment shown by the federal government and in particular the Minister for Education, Julia Gillard, to helping us continue to raise the literacy levels of indigenous school children”, said Rev. Crews.
The Exodus Foundation operates its Tutorial Centre literacy program in NSW, Queensland and the Northern Territory. The Tutorial Centre program, developed in conjunction with Macquarie University, provides intensive tuition to children whose reading age is at least 2 years below average.
Students attend the Exodus Foundation Tutorial Centres for five mornings a week for the duration of the 20-week program. The Tutorial Centres have a student-to-teacher ratio of one-to-five.
The federal government funding will enable the Exodus Foundation to improve the literacy levels of over 500 primary school age children over the next 2 years.
“Improving the literacy levels of indigenous children is one the most important things we can do to ensure they have a promising and productive future”, said Rev. Crews.
Crews continued, “Many of the indigenous kids have gone from being class clowns to model students after completing our Tutorial Centre literacy program. The gains of some students have been so impressive that they have received scholarships to prestigious private schools”.
