An Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) petition endorsed by over 23,000 people opposed to a charter of rights has been forwarded to the Senate. The petition is one of the biggest tabled in the life of the current parliament. It sends a clear message to the parliament that Christians from denominations and churches across Australia are very concerned about the prospect of a charter or its equivalent being implemented. The petition calls on the Parliament to reject the proposed charter of rights or to ensure that it is not enacted without first holding a referendum.

There were 23,584 signatures altogether, with the bulk coming from the electronic petition on the Make a Stand site that the Australian Prayer Network publicised, but a number of hand-signed petitions were also included. The tabling of such a large petition is vitally important given the recent National Human Rights Consultation Committee decision to recommend a charter go ahead. If you have not yet expressed your views to our politicians it is important you do so as the issue will likely come up for debate in the next sitting of Parliament.

Whilst the petition is now closed it is still possible to go to www.makeastand.org.au and as part of the 'Charter Rights No Wrongs' campaign and fire off an email to your Federal MP and Senators urging them not to support the proposed Human Rights Act. To date almost 8,000 emails, in addition to the signatures on the petition, have been sent, a tremendous effort.
