The suits are pressed, passports checked, and the strains of O Magnum Mysterium and Fly Me To The Moon have been floating over the campus for weeks. This Saturday our award-winning choir will flee Sydney’s rainy mornings and backed-up traffic for a whirlwind three week tour of France and Germany, following in the footsteps of composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Led by Principal and Choral Director Dr. David Johnston, the Choir will be performing in various historic churches, the University of Stuttgart, and Leipzig’s Neuse Rathaus concert hall.
After a packed semester of study, as well as recent assessments and exams, the choir members are looking forward to extending their musical wings. The intense rehearsal period has been a stretching experience for many. Tiffany Ng, 3rd year piano major says, “It’s been a growing process in terms of working as an ensemble.”
With the schedule including performances in Masses and services in historic churches, the ensemble has been practicing the sacred and religious songs that form part of their repertoire. Seryna Mascenon, 2nd year vocal major, says, “I’m most excited to see the choir growing in unity, moving past each individual note to look at the song and how it can minister to the audience.” Of course, the sightseeing opportunities are also a highlight, including locations like Paris, Versailles, Frankfurt, the Pergamum Museum in Berlin and Weimar.
We’ll keep you posted on the choir news. For now, we wish them safe travels, and all the best with their performances!
