Sydney Philharmonia Choirs will step outside the familiar concert and recital halls to take audiences on A Choral Pilgrimagee of some of Sydney’s most beautiful and intimate churches from Friday, 21 August to Sunday, 30 August.

Celebrating the famous pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, the Sydney Philharmonia Chamber Singers will perform at six iconic churches across Sydney, travelling from Newtown to Windsor to Darling Point to Manly and Parramatta.

More than 100,000 pilgrims travel each year to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain, where tradition has it that the remains of the apostle Saint James are buried.

Artistic & Musical Director, Brett Weymark said A Choral Pilgrimagee would provide a feast for the ear as well as the eye, marrying the music of renaissance composers such as Victoria, Guerrero and Rogier with the architecture of historic churches such as St Stephen’s Newtown and St Mark’s Darling Point.

“Music doesn’t need to be restricted to huge opera houses and concert halls. Many of the great choral pieces were originally performed in 16th century churches and cathedrals, so the pilgrimage represents a chance to take this remarkable music back to an intimate and spiritual setting,” said Brett Weymark.

Sydney Philharmonia Choirs will leave its orchestra behind for A Choral Pilgrimagee, relying solely on the voices of the Sydney Philharmonia Chamber Singers to lead audiences on a musical journey to remember.

“It really is choral music in its purest form; entirely acapella and a showcase of the beauty and power of the human voice,” said Brett Weymark.
