In a radio interview conducted by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Liberal backbencher Dr. Mal Washer said it is ‘repugnant and an insult to women’ that the Federal Government’s foreign aid policy bans abortion advice being given out.

Dr. Washer is leading a group of around 50 politicians from all parties to persuade the government to allow foreign aid money to be spent on providing abortion advice, reported the AAP. This has been met with a counter response by Christians who said the aid funding should not be used as a tool to ‘go against the rights of children.’

The ACL managing director, Jim Wallace said that the United Nation does not recognise abortion as a human right but instead affirms the rights of children and mothers to special care and assistance.

“Australia has a sound policy in this area, which is very much in keeping with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child which provides for the special protection of children both before and after birth. The UN does not recognise abortion as a human right but instead affirms the rights of children and mothers to special care and assistance,” Mr Wallace said.

He continues saying, “To change this policy would go against the rights of children, divert important aid resources, and could lead to situations where Australia would become party to abhorrent population control measures which further devalue human life.”

Mr. Wallace believed the money would be better spent in addressing the problems of the mortality rate of women in relation to pregnancy and childbirth in developing countries. The spending to fix the problem can be providing a better standard of medical care, as well as better nutrition, sanitation and adequate clean water, said Mr. Wallace.
