Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says he will talk to the Pope about the canonization of Mary MacKillop. MacKillop would be Australia’s first native-born saint.
Rudd made the announcement during a visit with nuns from the Order of the Sisters of St. Joseph. The Sisters of St. Joseph, Australia’s first religious order, was co-founded by MacKillop in 1866.
A spokesperson for the Sisters of St. Joseph said, "We are delighted the Prime Minister called in to see us and give us the news that he would be speaking with the Holy Father in Rome.''
To be canonized it must be shown that MacKillop was responsible for two miracles. A prayer to God through MacKillop is credited for the recovery of a dying woman in 1961.
The case of a cancer patient is also under scrutiny now.
Prime Minister Rudd will be in Italy next week for a Major Economies Forum. It is during that trip that he will meet with the Pope.
