Whether it is a novel suitable for teens is highly debatable. The school refused the mother’s request to remove it from the curriculum on the grounds that, to do so, would mean fifty other similar books would have to get the chop as well.
Parents of teen readers today have such a tough time trying to buy books even the Wall Street Journal controversially weighed into the discussion, calling today’s crop of YA literature ‘depraved’.
Omega Writers is therefore pleased to announce a new category in the CALEB Awards: the Boom Prize. It is a cash award for a fantasy or YA book which embodies the ideal Tolkien wrote about in On Fairytales: hope.
The winner of the Boom Prize will be selected by Rosie Boom, recipient of the CALEB Award (children’s books) in 2010 and 2011.
The CALEB Awards for 2012 has a prize pool of over $2000 and includes both published (including poetry, fiction and non-fiction) and unpublished sections.
