Caritas Australia as part of the Make Poverty History coalition will be standing in solidarity and making some noise for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on 17-19 September 2010.

For the fourth year in a row millions of people around the world will “Stand Up and Take Action” to demand that world leaders end poverty and achieve the MDGs.

Last year 225,334 Australians joined over 173 million people around the world who refused to stay seated in the face of extreme poverty, creating a global movement which continues to grow and gain momentum.

Concerts, rallies, art exhibitions, church services, petitions and education activities all play a part in a greater global movement to eradicate poverty.

In Fremantle at the Hulbert Street Sustainability Fiesta, Diocesan Director Jim Smith is urging everyone to be a voice and make some noise for the 1.4 billion people who still live on less than $2 a day on Saturday, 18th September 12.30pm – 1.00pm.

“The MDGs offer us a roadmap to end poverty and its root causes and they will not be met unless we do our fair share. We all have a role to play in tackling poverty. Joining a Stand Up event is one way we can all contribute.”

On the East Coast, Caritas Australia’s ‘Be More’ team will be joining thousands of Sydneysiders at First Fleet Park at 12.30pm on Saturday, 18th September with guest speakers, public performances, Indigenous music, a giant soccer ball and stalls.

“This is a critical year for the MDGs with the UN Summit commencing just days after the global Stand Up events,” said Alex Engel, Campaigns Coordinator at Caritas Australia.

“There has been clear progress towards implementing the MDGs however their overall success is still far from assured, according to a recent United Nations MDG Progress Report. It’s important for politicians to see the commitment of the general public to this issue. So come join us and refuse to stay silent in the face of extreme poverty.”

The eight targeted Goals call for specific outcomes by 2015 in eradicating extreme poverty and hunger; achieving universal primary education; promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women; reducing child mortality; improving maternal health; combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases; ensuring environmental sustainability; and developing a global partnership for development.

Stand Up, Take Action and Make A Noise for the MDGs will run from 17-19 September 2010.
