Fun and festivities for everyone will take place in two Sydney centres this week, as the community takes part in “Easter in the City” to celebrate the true meaning of Easter.
“These free festivals will provide a fun, celebratory atmosphere for families to meet together and connect with other people in the community,” said festival organiser Perry Anderson.
“These fun open-crowd festivals are free, and include balloon sculpting, face painting, circus skills, a giant game of snakes and ladders and craft.
On Wednesday, 31st March, Roseville College junior school, St George Christian School Junior Choir, North Cross Christian School, Pacific Hills and Toongabbie Christian School, will bring both Martin Place Amphitheatre (11.00am – 2.00pm) and Parramatta Mall (11.00am – 1.30pm) to life as they present their special focus on the unique Easter story.
Thousands of people all over Australia have already participated in outdoor community festivals in the lead-up to Easter, and similar lunchtime festivals are taking place this week in the other capital cities. In each venue the younger generation will be the stars of the day. These festivals will be followed by Good Friday prayer vigils from 6pm April 2 to 6am April 3, at outdoor locations across the country.
The culmination of the week’s activities will be the Awakening March on Easter Sunday, April 4th, when thousands of people will march from the Town Hall to Hyde Park.
Twenty one years ago with encroaching commercialism, Fusion, servicing the Christian churches, started an experiment to reclaim Easter as an authentic, Australian community celebration. The Awakening started as Easter Sunday afternoon marches of celebration in every capital city, joined by satellite broadcast. It has now spread across the nation, with one in five Australians having participated at some stage.
