The Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) today welcomed the findings of a Department of Education and Training investigation that there was no substance to a complaint against a Focus on the Family seminar at Canberra High School, but said it was disappointing the organisation’s reputation had been wrongly tarnished.
ACL Managing Director Jim Wallace acknowledged Education Minister Andrew Barr’s statement to the ACT Assembly about the investigation and said he was pleased to see it publicly shown that the complaint about the seminar had no foundation in reality. But he noted it included no apology by Mr Barr for his statements demeaning Focus on the Family.
“We are disappointed that the good reputation of Focus on the Family has been put in jeopardy from an obvious over-reaction to an isolated complaint,” Mr Wallace said.
“In the future we would like to see better processes put in place by the Education Minister and his department before the name of an organisation is tarnished and its program suspended without justification.
“Now that the investigation has found that the complaint against Focus on the Family has not been upheld we would also sincerely hope that they will be able to continue to present seminars in ACT schools.
“Values-based teaching is vital for the healthy development of young people and needs to be supported by the ACT Government.”
