New Worldview leadership team leader Rod Vardy and his wife Miriam joined fellow Worldview team members and students for a three week church planting module in western Sydney in September.

The environment of western Sydney was both familiar and strange.

“Having lived in Pakistan for over a decade, Miriam and I felt comfortable wandering around Western Sydney and particularly the shopping centres in Auburn and Lakemba,” Rod said.

“Sometimes we had to remind ourselves that we were actually still in Australia.”

The church planting module was run in the context of a WEC church planting initiative in western Sydney.

“We were involved in ‘abundant Gospel sowing’ as we distributed leaflets into hundreds of letter boxes, giving the occupants the opportunity of contacting the team to receive a free Gospel or a Jesus DVD in their own language,” Rod said.

“Then there was doorknocking!”

“While not everyone’s favourite pasttime, it proved very useful and not as scary as expected.”

The group found that many Eastern and Asian people were warm towards them and sometimes invited them in.

“By this means we were able to give away a good number of Gospels and DVDs, trusting and praying that this
would be the beginning of the journey for many to discover Jesus as Son of God and Saviour.”

The module also involved defining church planting, studying the Bible and other authors, and doing anthropological research.

“We discovered that the majority of the people living in these suburbs were from many countries (eg Turkey, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Africa) and particularly, that a majority of them were from Muslim countries.”
The module was a benefit to all participants.

“Overall a very useful experience for the Worldview staff as we continue to serve God providing “Holistic training for reaching people planting churches” and for the students as they prepare to reach people and plant churches amongst unreached people groups worldwide,” Rod said.
