With debate over an emissions trading scheme underway in the Senate, the science behind climate change has been put under the spotlight in a new peer-reviewed public policy magazine launched today.
Entitled Viewpoint, the magazine is edited and published by the Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) and is targeted at key decision makers including Federal and State politicians, as well as bureaucrats, academics, and educational institutions.
It aims to assess and critique public policy of concern to the Christian constituency and thereby underpin a more values-based approach to policy development on key issues. Importantly, it aims to allow both sides of an argument to be put.
Viewpoint editor David Yates said the first edition of the new magazine features debate about the science behind climate change – a key issue on the current political agenda.
“With terms like ‘believer’, ‘sceptic’ and ‘denier’ being tossed around freely it can be difficult to get to the heart of the issue, which is the scientific facts the different arguments are based on,” Mr Yates said.
“The opposing Viewpoint articles by Professor Andrew Glikson from the Australian National University and Professor Bob Carter from James Cook University seek to dispel this situation by putting all the science on the table and allowing the reader a more informed perspective on the issue – assisting them to weigh up the scientific arguments for and against climate change.
“The first edition of Viewpoint also examines issues such as freedom of religion, classification, girls and violence, homelessness, refugees, the need for baby safe havens, and ‘making poverty your business’. As well as peer-reviewed articles, the magazine includes a section for established journalists reflecting on society and culture, and a ‘political opinions’ section - with politicians from both sides of the fence sharing their latest thoughts.”
