30 January 2008 John 14 v 8-14
Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father. That is all we need."
Jesus answered, "I have been with you a long time now. Do you still not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. So why do you say, 'Show us the Father'? Don't you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I say to you don't come from me, but the Father lives in me and does his own work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or believe because of the miracles I have done. I tell you the truth, whoever believes in me will do the same things that I do. Those who believe will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And if you ask for anything in my name, I will do it for you so that the Father's glory will be shown through the Son. If you ask me for anything in my name, I will do it.
Notes
Today we live in a world of split attentions, and divided commitments. So many times we may start a conversation, but then our attention is drawn to the computer for a conversation on MSN, or a game we are playing. Or our attention is drawn to information flashing on our TV screens, or maybe even a text message on our mobiles.
Jesus tells Thomas here that he knows the Father, because he has spent time with Jesus. How much time will we spend with Jesus, so we can get to know him and the plans he has for us?
We all live busy lives, but if we don't spend time with each other, how can relationships be built, and the same is true of our relationship with God. If we don't spend time with him how do we expect to know him, and even know the plans he has for us. The challenge for us is to think about our commitments, and maybe realise the amount of time we spend with each other and with God.
Prayer
Dear God, please help me to spend time with you, as I want to know you personally, not about you, but actually know you.
