Rev Dr Gordon Moyes of the Family First Party has expressed his concerns about the current policy and legislation that provides pre-employment screening of adults who volunteer and work in child-related organisations.
"There are limitation requirements set out of who is required to provide a Working with Children Check or Police Check. The development of this process is an important strategy to ensure and maintain child-safe organisations. But it is not enough!"
"Do Sunday school teachers, youth club workers, not-for profit group volunteers, Scouts and sports club officials, and teachers of ethics and scripture in schools, fully understand their responsibilities to ensure a child-safe environment for our children?"
Rev Dr Moyes stated, "If I am given the opportunity to represent our State in the next Parliament, within the next twelve months I will introduce a bill that will make it compulsory for all employees who work with children to undertake a "Safe Space" Workshop.
"This workshop is designed to teach the employee working with our children what their responsibilities include such as their duty of care, codes of conduct, positional power, transparency and accountability, protect vulnerable people including children at risk of harm-definitions, indicators and response procedures and how to establish and run safe church ministry programs.
This workshop is designed to supplement the registration of Police Checks and Working With Children Checks for workers with children and youth. This would be pro-active and preventative rather than just checking on prior convictions", concluded Dr Moyes.
