England have come unstuck again by penalties, this time by an suburb Italy as England again fail when the pressure is on. England dominated parts of the fiery quarter final encounter however Italy dominated most of possession as they looked most likely to snatch a winner. In the end penalties were the order of play and when Italy missed their 2nd spot kick, it looked likely England might end their poor run of penalty shootout loses. However Ashley Young and Ashley Cole both missed late on to give Italy a place along side Germany and Portugal in the Semi Finals.

Portugal were too strong for Czech Republic with a 1-0 win with another inspired display from Christiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese superstar was impossible to contain as he nearly single headedly put Portugal in the Semi Finals.

Spain continued their passage through the competition with a relatively comfortable 2-0 win over a disappointing France. Alonso was the hero with a brace to give Spain a fantastic chance of winning 3 major trophies in 3 major competitions in a row, something never achieved before by a European country. Spain will now play a local derby with Portugal and attempt to keep Ronaldo quiet.

Equal favourates Germany kept their end of the bargain up with an entertaining 4-2 win over Greece. Germany were just simply too strong for a spirited Greece and now look ahead to a tough Semi Final with Italy to see who advances to the Final late next week.
