Prime Minister Kevin Rudd expressed clear support for the school chaplaincy program in announcing a two year extension of funding for the program until the end of the 2011 school year. The announcement which was made at this weekends Australian Christian Lobby National Conference in Canberra has been warmly welcomed by a wide range of Christian leaders, as well as grass-roots Christians.

In making the announcement Mr Rudd spoke of his clear and long-standing commitment to the school chaplaincy program, dating back to its beginnings in Queensland. He spoke of a strong appreciation of the valuable role chaplains are playing in helping both school students and their families in a wide variety of situations. Mr Rudd said his Government would commit a further $42 million in funding over the 2010 and 2011 school years which represents an extra year's funding over what had previously been allocated.

The Prime Minister indicated that during that time of the extension the Government plans to consult with the community as to how best to shape chaplaincy and pastoral care programs for the period beyond. Given the overwhelming success of the school chaplaincy program - as borne out by recent research - it is strongly hoped this will lead to the school chaplaincy program being not only funded but also extended into the future.

Australian Christian Lobby Managing Director Jim Wallace said that the theme of this year's ACL National Conference was 'Putting Kids First' and support for the school chaplaincy program is one key way of doing this. "The Conference, attending by around 250 people, really focussed on the many challenges confronting children in today's society and the crucial need to better advantage children in public policy," Mr Wallace said. "Our aim is to see the interests of the child in the forefront of public discussion - a must if we are to genuinely care for our future generations."

Baptist Union of Australia National Director Revd Dr Brian Winslade said.“This decision sends a strong signal that both sides of Australian politics recognise the value that chaplains bring to the whole school environment. The additional funding announced will directly benefit students. The program helps to ensure that students receive essential support for their behavioural and spiritual wellbeing. It is an excellent initiative that deserves our full support,” he said.
