On Sunday, November 29th Gymea Baptist Church will officially open their new church auditorium and meeting space in Tea Gardens Avenue, Kirrawee.

Over 700 members, supporters and dignitaries are expected to attend the opening which will start at 10am.

“We have been planning our new buildings for six years,” said Senior Pastor, Rev Karl Faase. “Whilst the building phase has been quite short, raising financial support and making sure the design fits our needs has taken nearly four years of careful planning,” he said.

Gymea Baptist Church started sixty years ago (1949) when Hotham Road Baptist Church was opened on the corner of Hotham Road and Tea Gardens Avenue – the current site of the church’s Turner Lodge.

The first church building was a used military Nissen hut. Over the next ten years the church outgrew its premises several times as more and more people became involved. The Sunday School met in several used poultry sheds that were hosed out every Saturday evening.

In the mid-50s the church changed its name to Gymea Baptist and made plans to construct the church and Christian Education buildings which have, until today, housed the church and its ministries.

When the church was opened in 1962 there were 200 adults listed in the church directory with an additional 150 children – over ten-fold the original membership.

“Since then the church has grown to more then 800 adults and children,” said Karl. “We’re proud to be continuing the vision of our founders and we hope to make them proud as we stand on their shoulders and seek to continue to impact our community for the next fifty years,” he said.

After the opening Gymea Baptist Church will hold regular Sunday services at 9.30am and 6.30pm with a complete range of activities for children, young people and adults of all ages.
