Caritas Australia has enlisted the help of Australia’s hottest dance troupe sensation, Justice Crew, to launch its A Just Climate campaign urging supporters to take action to achieve climate justice.

The campaign is the latest of Caritas Australia’s “Be More” initiatives, which challenge people to live according to the principle set down by the late Archbishop Oscar Romero, who said: “Aspire not to have more, but to Be More”.

Caritas Australia CEO Jack de Groot, said it was exciting to be working with Justice Crew, who took Australia by storm, coming from nowhere to win Australia’s Got Talent in 2010.

“Justice Crew are a group of young guys who are really living the ‘Be More’ life,” Mr de Groot said.

From humble beginnings in Sydney’s western suburbs, the nine member outfit collected a cheque for $250,000 and a contract with Sony Music when they won the TV talent show. Determined to use their winnings to ‘Be More’, the troupe invested in Justice Academy Inc, a program which helps disadvantaged young Australians work on their confidence, self-expression and team building skills by hosting free dance workshops and classes.

“We are delighted that a Justice Crew video clip forms the centrepiece of our A Just Climate campaign promotion at www.caritas.org.au,” Mr de Groot said.

“The effects of a more extreme and volatile climate are already a daily reality for many of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable. The earth is warming. Weather is becoming more extreme and unpredictable. Hunger and disease are spreading.

“In the coming months, Caritas supporters right around Australia will take a stand in solidarity with the world’s poor through the A Just Climate campaign.”

The campaign will culminate in August when supporters are asked to take a stand and hold an event in their local community to highlight the issues surrounding Climate Justice and the poor and to come up with ways to reduce their own footprint on the earth.

This year’s campaign kit features Sweet Water - a short film telling the story of communities living in the coastal region of south-west Bangladesh – as well as a guide to help organise your event, petitions and much more.
