Kay Simon, the Vice President of the South West Pacific Baptist Association, was interviewed by the Australian Missionary News IPTV while at the Baptist World Congress in Hawaii recently.
She had also been one of the 20 women from Papua New Guinea who attended the World Baptist Women's Congress which was held immediately prior to the World Baptist Congress. Six of them stayed on for this second congress.
Kay is from village of Lumisa near Mt Hagen in the western highlands of Papua New Guinea. She noted that this has been a major centre for Baptist missionary work in the Mt Hagen area.
Numerous familiar missionary names from Australia and New Zealand were mentioned, it was like reading the Who's Who of Baptist Missions. This illustrates the foundations which were retained by the indigenous Baptist leaders.
Kay Simon heads up the Baptist Women's work for both Papua New Guinea and the South West Pacific and one of the critical roles the Baptist Women's Ministry plays is that of ensuring safe births in the villages.
Giving birth in many rural areas of Papua New Guinea and the South West Pacific remains a dangerous undertaking, and the Baptist Women's Ministry has focused on this very special area of medical and midwifery concern.
The Baptist Women's ministry also provides lots of training in a wide variety of areas to ensure young women get gainfully employed. The office has been provided with a computer and they partner with Baptists from Australia, New Zealand, USA and Canada.
