The federal government of Australia has recently passed a law entitled Tax Law Amendment Bill No.1 which took effect last July 1, 2009. This action was taken as part of government’s cost saving measures for 2009 budget. The said bill imposed tax on all Australians who are earning money abroad.
However this law exempted those who are working for diplomatic and defense purpose, workers who are part of AusAid program and its known organizations overseas. This law clearly affects almost 90,000 Australians who are working outside the country. Unfortunately, mission workers and Christian ministry personnel are not exempted unless they are part of Mission Interlink.
Mission Interlink is an Australian based network that includes ministries, Bible colleges, churches and individual who are working under Christ’s love in cross cultural and global mission. Before the passing of this law that happened last June 24, the organization was able to make representations that cause their members and small missions like CLTC-PNG and Steer Inc to be exempted to the rule.
