Newtown Mission will celebrate 150 years of serving the local community from their King Street Chapel on Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th August, with an interactive art workshop, historical tours, and community celebrations throughout the weekend.
On Saturday local artists and the general public are invited to celebrate the chapel’s 150th anniversary by contributing to a 150 piece mosaic inspired by the 150 Psalms. The workshop titled ‘150 Songs of Celebration’ will be held in the chapel between 12-4pm.
Sunday’s celebrations will begin at 9:30am with a worship service featuring highlights from Newtown Mission’s history, special guests and lively worship by Newtown Mission’s Tongan choir. The service will be followed by lunch and the celebrations will continue throughout the afternoon with live music and entertainment.
Historical tours of the chapel and guided tours of the Revelation Ceiling - a monumental artwork by Kon Parris spanning the entire ceiling of the chapel - will be available at throughout the weekend.
Newtown Mission has played an important role in the community, for over 150 years - offering practical support and care for the needy in our community. Under the current leadership of Pastor Brian Unterrheiner, the Newtown Drop-In Centre has become a haven for many of Sydney’s homeless and marginalised. The church itself represents the diversity of our community, comprised of people from various social backgrounds and all walks of life.
The 150th Anniversary of the King Street Chapel provides a unique opportunity to give thanks for all of the lives impacted over the years through the work of Newtown Mission. Members of the broader community are welcome to join for this unique celebrations.
