Coast council officials say they aren’t responsible for what people look at on Coast Library computers… even if that content is porn.
The council has received complaints about the widespread use of library computers to access pornography sites. More concerning, the fact that the porn is being viewed at all times of day, even when children are near by.
Council members say they will not censor internet use at libraries and they add, software that might help filter out the unsavory sites is not always reliable. Instead library staff has been trained to identify inappropriate use of library computers and anyone caught surfing adult sites could face police action or fines.
Last December a man was sentenced to two years for downloading child pornography on a Maroochydore Library computer.
Child protection advocates say open internet access in public areas that children frequent is not safe and could potentially lead to lawsuits.
