Queensland school chaplains are stepping up fundraising efforts to ensure students have access to their services regardless of the outcome of a High Court challenge to cut the National School Chaplaincy Program.

Gold Coast chaplains will walk 30km from one end of the coast to the other, in an effort to raise much needed funds and they have enlisted a high-profile State Member of Parliament to help.

In an exclusive interview with Christian Today Australia, Christine Smith, Member for Burleigh and veteran member of the Queensland Parliament said she threw her support behind the project after meeting with students in her local schools.

“I have seen the positive influence school chaplains have on students. They offer non-judgemental advice along with support and encouragement.

“Chaplains have been successfully working in State schools for 20 years and have become friends and mentors to students and the wider community.

“I met (a local chaplain) about 8 years ago when he was the Chappy at Miami State High School. He gave me an insight into what some students are dealing with - their home and personal stories (no names).

“The need for someone to listen, suggest ways of dealing with issues, perhaps just a shoulder to cry on, was loud and strong!” Ms Smith said.

The ‘K’s for Kids’ fundraiser, to be held on 28 May, could be overshadowed by the highly publicised High Court action to cut the public funding of school chaplains.

The High Court will be conducting hearings in mid-May and Ms Smith is praying for a positive outcome for the National Chaplaincy Program and said her government was committed to supporting school chaplains no matter the outcome.

“I pray the action taken will be unsuccessful.

“The Bligh government, however, is very supportive of school chaplaincy and the Attorney-General has taken the decision to intervene in the High Court challenge and highlight the government's support for school chaplaincy,” she said.

Ms Smith also encouraged her colleagues to strap on their walking shoes and support school chaplaincy.

“There are so many good causes that MPs are called on to support. We each have issues that are close to our hearts and sometimes make the difficult decision to fund/support one over another.

“I would certainly encourage my colleagues to become involved but leave it to them to make that commitment,” said Ms Smith.
