Ridley Melbourne has announced the appointment of Mrs Lisa Brown to its faculty. Lisa has been a tutor in youth ministry at Ridley for the past two years. Her new half time role will see Lisa lecturing in youth ministry and coordinating a reinvigorated Centre for Children’s and Youth Ministry (CYCM).

Over the last six months Lisa has been developing a strategic plan to better promote children’s and youth ministry in churches. The centrepiece of her plan is the running of training days that will improve the ministry skills and bible knowledge of lay volunteers. Over 100 people are expected to attend the first of these on 13 February 2010.

Lisa is also advocating a return to diploma level study for youth and children’s ministers – an approach that has proved successful in other parts of Australia.

Lisa will also be teaching a new subject for ordination candidates called “Orientation to Youth and Children’s Ministry”. This unit will give future ministers a basic understanding of key youth ministry models, child faith development theory and the strategic issues in this ministry area.

Acting Principal, Rev Dr Tim Foster is the founder of Youthworks College in Sydney, and so he is particularly keen to see Ridley play a much larger role in training youth and children’s ministers. Dr Foster says, “the key to effective children’s and youth ministry in a diocese is our capacity to raise up and train good leaders. Lisa’s appointment indicates our confidence in her and our continued commitment to this vital ministry area.”
