The Salvos have issued a call to the business community for generosity in personal giving, in addition to corporate giving, as 400 Sydney business leaders prepare to attend the 2009 Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal launch today.
Spokesperson, Major Paul Kinder said: “With budgets for corporate philanthropy tightening, we will be relying more than ever on generous individuals with the capacity to make significant gifts on top of their company giving.”
“This year, Australians have faced - and supported each other through - not only the economic downturn, but unprecedented natural disasters. For The Salvation Army also, across the cities and the bush, these issues have placed greater than ever demand upon our services, with more people turning to us for help. However, experience would tell us that when times are tough, Australians just dig deeper,” said Major Kinder.
National patron of the Red Shield Appeal, Governor General Quentin Bryce, who will officiate at today’s launch, has also called for continued generosity in the current climate: “Here in Australia we have a huge capacity to support each other generously and wholeheartedly. I have seen it again and again, and I know that as the road we’re traveling gets harder, we will see it at work in our communities and across our nation.”
“In these times we look for the example of our leaders and drivers, and we look deeply into our own hearts to ask what we can do to help,” said the Governor General.
The Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal, which includes a business appeal, direct mail campaign and national doorknock, has a national target of $73 million. In Sydney the target is $19 million.
This year, the doorknock component of the appeal will be held on the weekend of 23-24 May.
To donate to The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal or to volunteer to be a collector for the doorknock weekend on 23-24 May, phone The Salvation Army’s national hotline number on 13 SALVOS (13 72 58) for the cost of a local call.
You can also donate through the Salvos’ website at salvos.org.au, through any Westpac branch, or by posting your cheque to PO Box 9888 in your capital city.
