The Salvation Army has reminded the community that the national Red Shield Appeal Doorknock will take place this weekend 28-29 May.

The Salvos aim to mobilize more than 100,000 collectors to knock on doors right across the nation in an effort to raise their doorknock weekend goal of $10 million. The national target for the Red Shield Appeal this year is $79 million.

Salvation Army Appeals Director, Major Jeff Winterburn said: “The demand upon our day to day social and community serv ices is growing, with the increasing cost of living impacting many low-income families.

“Many of our clients are on the poverty line already so when rent, electricity and food prices go up, there’s nothing else they can cut. Rising prices mean they have to make daily choices sometimes between buying food and necessities or paying bills.

“After all the challenges we’ve been facing in recent months implementing our flood response plan and helping people in crisis, our resources are severely stretched.

“The generous donations from the Australian public will allow us to maintain our vital social programs in the year ahead, assisting those who face personal disasters such as financial hardship, unemployment, homelessness and domestic abuse,” said Major Winterburn.
