The marriage between professional sport and betting has taken another jolt with the Gold Coast Suns AFL defender Nathan Bock suspended for two rounds in the 2012 AFL season. He was also fined $10,000 for telling a family member and a friend he was playing in the forward line in the next match, round 24. As a result, bets were placed and won as Bock kicked the first goal of the game.

AFL general manager football operations, Adrian Anderson, has commented that Bock was reckless in his decision, which goes against AFL guidelines. However, he was confident it was an isolated incident, explaining Bock had been quick to tell officials and had cooperated with the AFL's investigations.

Looking Wider

The news conveys a nervousness throughout Australian sport. The Australian Sports Commission, Australia's sporting governing body, has asked its sporting organizations to be aware of the danger of illegal betting on their sport. Looking wider on a world scale, Pakistani Cricket is still recovering after several national players were charged with illegal betting related charges.

As sporting bodies seek greater sponsorship from betting companies, the danger is for levels of corruption and illegal betting to creep in and tarnish sport.
