Young people across Sydney will be making a public stand for a drug free lifestyle this Saturday. Last year, over 300 young people from Seventh-day Adventist youth groups around Sydney signed a petition asking the government to “use your powers to double the recommended tax increase on tobacco and alcohol.” The Rudd government’s alcopop tax hike that was subsequently introduced was a welcome measure.
On 6 September 2008, the Adventurers and Pathfinders youth groups will be marching across the ANZAC bridge and around Blackwattle and Rozelle Bay as a show of their commitment to lead a drug free lifestyle.
“This is a good time for young people to make lifestyle decision about their lives,” says Pastor John Wells, associate director Adventist Youth in Sydney. “We want to encourage young people to make that good choice.”
The youth ministries department of the Adventist Church in the South Pacific has organised the Drug Free Walk for more than ten years at different venues. Last year, participants walked across the Harbour Bridge to commemorate its 75th anniversary.
The young people will be dressed in full uniform of their Adventurers and Pathfinders Clubs for the Drug Free Walk. They will assemble at 3.30pm on 6 September 2008 (Saturday) at the Jubilee Park Station on the Light Rail line.
