This is the first time the Coptic (Egyptian) Orthodox Church in Australia has organised an event like this. It will encompass many Christian denominations that aggrieve the oppressive circumstances that Christians are facing in Egypt today. The vigil will be attended by thousands of Australians from various backgrounds, political and religious leaders have confirmed their attendance.
The aim is to fight for justice in a peaceful manner and have our voices heard.
The purpose is to raise awareness for the 15 million Coptic Christians, who suffer from basic human rights, inequality, and are treated as second and third class citizens from a Government that says it treats its citizens well.
The Australian Coptic Community is in mourning and praying for the cessation of the ongoing persecution and sectarian violence inflicted upon Egyptian Christians, which contravenes basic human rights laws.
The inaction of the Egyptian Government in relation to the above matters has been widely condemned by countries such as the US, Canada, Italy, France, The European Union Parliament and the Vatican.
We now call for the Australian Government to condemn the Egyptian Government on the violation of basic human rights and to take a tougher stance against sectarian violence.
Australia is the home to 70,000 Australian Copts and they look to the Australian Government for its leadership on human rights in Egypt as they are a signatory to the United Nations Convention for Human Rights.
