The AFL Grand Final is the biggest event on the Australian sporting calendar. Sweeney Sports named the AFL Grand Final Australia's most important sporting event, with the largest attendance, metropolitan television audience and overall interest of any annual Australian sporting event. Over 2.6 million Australians watched it in 2011.

Pregame entertainment

The pregame entertainment has tried to match this epic standard. Last year, fans criticized a weak-voiced Meatloaf as he stumbled through some of his greatest hits. This year the AFL needs to gain credibility with an even bigger act.

2012

Rumors have it that US Rock legend, Bruce “The Boss” Springsteen will play at the Grand Final during his 2012 Australian tour. The AFL and tour organizers poured cold water on the rumors, but many are pointing to the star as the big act to thrill the fans this year. This talk puts AFL back on the agenda, and is just what the AFL needs as the cricket season winds up and the AFL begins it campaign for the winter market share. Previous Grand Final entertainment has included INXS and Lionel Richie (2010), Mark Seymour (2009), and Powderfinger (2008). The Boss would be another outstanding name for this great Australian sporting event.
