The passage of the stem-cell research bill in NSW on Tuesday will not stop public debate on this issue, says Sydney Anglican Archbishop Dr Peter Jensen as Christians described the legislation as ‘immoral.’

Archbishop Jensen believed the legislation had serious implication and argued that even if stem-cell research could unlock cures for diseases, it does not mean the research was right, reported AAP.

The Catholic Church also agreed with Archbishop Jensen argument, and further said to AAP, the legislation could lead to morally abhorrent practices such as ‘the creation of embryos with three or more human parents.’

The bill was passed with a margin of 14 votes. 27 Upper House MPs had voted in favour of it while 13 voted against it, reported AAP. Before the vote was schedule, the Christian Democratic Party (CDP) had urged all Christians to pray, in the hope of changing some MPs’ attitude and to influence those who were undecided.

In a press release, the CDP had expressed its disappointment at the vote. Further, Reverend Fred Nile, the leader of the CDP, tried to move eight amendments to the stem-cell research Bill which were all rejected.
